Hello,
So I decided to "descend" from the PC Master Race. In December I parted out my gaming PC on Craigslist and picked up a Xbox One S and Samsung 4K HDR TV. To make a long story short, I just don't game like I use to. I wanted something for some solid casual gaming, just not $1400+ Custom PC gaming like I had. I was also overdue for a TV and Media Player upgrade. Being I was always on my PC and never in front of my TV, I didn't much care before. Now it had become just the opposite. My Samsung 4K replaced my old Sony 720P and my Xbox One S replaced my Nexus Player and old Sony Blu Ray Player.
I picked up the 500GB White model that came with Battlefield 1. Being the tinkerer that I am, I instantly took it apart. I swapped out the 500GB Hard Drive with a 2TB Seagate Firecuda Hybrid Drive. I also swapped out the stock 120mm fan with a Fractal Design Venturi HP-12, the last part I had left over from my Custom PC. Replaced the stock thermal paste with some Arctic Silver 5 being I already had it apart, and put it back together. It has been running flawlessly and is dead silent!
This is my first console in over a decade and I'm impressed. The Xbox One S has to be the best All-in-One media player. I wasn't sure what to expect graphically, but games look great to me. I don't know if it's because of the TV size, distance from it, upscaling, or what, but Battlefield 1 and Skyrim SE appear to look just as good as they did on my PC. (24" 1080P 144hz VA Monitor) I thought I was going to hate going to a controller from a keyboard and mouse but now I prefer it. I just feel much more comfortable gaming with a controller. I find myself wanting to game far more with the Xbox One S than I did towards the end on PC and I think it's due to comfort, display size, and convenience. I can kick back after work and watch Game of Thrones on the big screen and fire up Skyrim when it's over.
I gamed on PC for soo long that I didn't see how far consoles have come. The Xbox One S is an awesome piece of hardware, especially for the price! I'm now invested in the Microsoft / Xbox Ecosystem, especially being I decided on going with a digital game library. (Hence 2TB Upgrade) So I won't be building another Gaming PC. The Xbox One S provides more than enough gaming capabilities for my needs, so I'm sure future hardware (Scorpio and beyond) will too.
So... Anyone have any recommendations for me? General console settings, optimizations, apps, etc? I think I'm good as far as accessories go. I got a second Microsoft controller for free when I bought the console from Best Buy. I picked up the Microsoft Chat Pad and Media Remote too. I also picked up a PowerA Mini Green Wired Controller for my 4 year old son. I figured it would be good for his small hands and no batteries.
Game recommendations? I like trying out Indie Games. I've been playing Astroneer and The Long Dark quite a bit lately.
