I ask because I want to play it badly, after having finished GTA 5, and I actually have played a few missions of San Andreas on the phone but the small screen, performance and controls just aren't cutting it even with a Bluetooth controller.
I've done some research but further input would be appreciated.
Here are my findings:
Ps2 version is a hot mess on a HD tv. This also runs very badly at 25 fps or less in most situations. This includes the PS2 Classics release on both ps3 and ps4 (emulated) which both have severe frame pacing issues and really bad aliasing at 720p (ps3) and 1080p (ps4). Also view distance is so poor it actually affects driving around (cars pop in front of you).
Ps3/xbox360 remake, based on the mobile port (a port of the mobile port) seems to run consistently and has upgraded textures and view distance is much better. Xbox360 version is a little blurry. Sadly some of the key visual effects are missing (heat haze/lighting/orange bloom) leading to a completely different, more sterile atmosphere. Also missing a big number of songs. Ouch.
PC (with mods). Best looking, best draw distance and performance. BUT, (a huge, tragic BUT) the controls induce tears....even with the xbox controller mod which only half works in windows 10 and windows 7, things are hit and miss in the controls department. The gameplay suffers as a result. Also the latest patch (which you need to have the controller mod semi-work) removes a bunch of songs.
Xbox (original) version. Allegedly looks good even in SD, runs good, good draw distance, has all the ps2 visual effects, content, etc. Possible contender?
Why this hugely popular, really good game (by all accounts) never received a PROPER remake for today's devices is baffling to me. The fact they just lazily ported the mobile version to ps3/xbox360 (complete with older console effects missing) leads me to believe Rockstar simply don't care.
