Let's face it. People thought the 3DS was doomed at first. The console didn't change substantially, so what happened? Games. Good first-party games. Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Ocarina of Time 3D. Yes they were good and contributed to sales. But what sold the most systems and resulted in the introduction of a whole new model? Pokemon. With a Pokemon game all but confirmed for Switch, there will be at least a few guaranteed sales. The Switch isn't as far behind PS4 and XBox One as the Wii was to 360 and PS3. We'll be getting the same Nintendo games regardless of power, and even if we look at the Wii, it had far better third party support than Wii U even though it was a far less capable machine. And I'm not just talking shovelware. Although we may look down on it now, the Wii got the majority of Call of Duty games released in its lifespan, every Fifa and many more! While it wasn't PS3/360 level support, there were at least games being released! I can see big third-party games being released for Switch but with marginally worse graphics than XBox One. After all, on the handheld they can downgrade the resolution to sub-720p and it wouldn't make as much of a difference. Lower the resolution of a PC game. Frame rate skyrockets. I'm not worried at the moment, but I'm skeptical of the 40% performance drop.
