1080p = 2073600 = 1.44TF
900p = 1440000 = 1.00TF
720p = 921600 = 0.64TF
PS4 Render games at 1080p =1920*1080=2073600
Lets take this number as a base for comparison
We know the PS4 has around 1.44TF of power
So.. to port the exact same title to a 900p console (XONE)
1600*900=1440000...2073600/1440000=1,44... 1,44TF/1,44=1TF
To port a 1080p game to 900p console it need to be 1TF powerfull
We all know the XONE has around 1TF and render games at 900p
Now.. lets say the Switch aims to port the same games at 720p
1280*720=921600...2073600/921600=2,25... 1,44TF/2,25=0.6TF
So the Switch needs only ~600GF to render the exact same games
The port can also cap fps or lower graphical fidelity if needed
The image quality is pretty much the same given a small screen

These 600gflops would be necessary undocked. Thats a problem taking into account recent rumours. But remember.. we even dont know yet if its pascal or maxwell. How many cuda cores... what kind of technological advances. If it can run the new Skyrim it probably reaches 600GF. It could do some magic even reaching around 500GF. If it wasnt this powerfull it woudnt be a portable home console. It would be a portable console like the 3ds and marketed as such. And you know, It obviously isnt weaker than a shield.
Nintendo wouldnt bet all their chips on a flop like the shield. The shield is 2 years old allready.. not even 16nm.. The rumours says the Switch is slower than a WIiU Undocked... The footage of BoTW says otherwise, Switch is faster than this.
Anther thing.. take into account that there are a lot of games that runs 1080 60fps on ps4 and also runs 1080 60fps xone.. meaning those games dont use all the PS4 1,44TF power. In those situations it would be at max topping 1080p at 1TF, meaning the switch would need only ~400GF to run those games at 720p60. Fallout 4 is a example of a game that runs 1080p30 on XOne. The games that run 720p60 on Xone like Battlefield 4 needs around 500GF to be run 720p30 on Switch. If the Switch can reach around 500GF undocked yes it can run all those ported games. If the dock has the abillity to make it a little faster it would be also possible to upscale those 720p to 900p or even 1080 depending title. Not as smooth as native 900p/1080p but possible nonenthless.
TLDR: The Switch only need around 500GFlops of performance undocked to be really competitive and a great choice over a ps4 or xone even to play AAA titles given it can be used on the go.
PS: Worst scnenario the Switch being around 250GF undocked, just cut half the framerate and you get the same titles... Fallout 4 720p15, or 540p30 wihch would be wiser. Now check this video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBWPcMUeVU8 ... Is 540p on a tiny screen enough for you? it could output at 1080i on those 250GF vs true 720p at 500GF
