I am and always have been a PC gamer. It's just what we had growing up and what I stuck with. My son is 4, soon to be 5, and asked for a "game thing" from Santa. I wasn't sure what he meant until I talked to my wife and she said they were at the neighbors up the street and the boys there had an Xbox360. So with WiiU being dead, that leaves xbox one and ps4. I glanced at the games at Walmart today and they both have a dozen or so games that are age appropriate (Lego avengers, transformers). Where I'm lost is ease of use. Are the menus to launch a game easy to navigate? Are the controllers of one console more ergonomically friendly to smaller kid hands than another? Anything else I'm not considering?
His room tv is a 32" 720p with my wife's broken old Wii from college that didn't play games. It was just a Netflix box until that stopped working as well 2years ago.
