TV or buy a monitor?

About four years ago I bought a 55" Samsung plasma TV. It's nothing spectacular but it's much better than anything I ever owned. I was told it would be good for gaming because of the "darker blacks" and "high refresh rates". Maybe true, Idk. I would post the specs but I'm at work right now. I think it's 720p 60hz.

A few months back I started playing ksp on my laptop. It could barely run it and as my ships got bigger, it became increasingly more difficult to play. I'm now building my first gaming pc. From what I've seen on here over the past few weeks, it's a pretty standard mid-range $800ish build... i5-6500, rx480 8gb. Since my budget was about $800, I had planned on using my TV as a monitor and putting that money back into my pc. Now, after reading entirely too much about it on reddit, I feel I won't be using my pc to it's fullest potential. I'm pretty sure it will be able to handle 1080p or 140hz at 60 fps (I don't really know what I'm talking about). I have now convinced myself that I need a monitor.

On my xbox one, I play games like battlefield, rocket league and dark souls. I'm not a competitive gamer by any metric and I probably won't be noticing things like input lag or a few lost fps. However, if I'm going to spend the money on a nice pc, I want to get the most out of it. I'm conflicted.

Would it be ok to use my tv or would there be too much lost potential?
