Adjust your expectations on the Switch's graphical power if you haven't already

I'm somewhat dismayed to see that many people are still holding out hope for a powerful console, so let's draw some inferences:

  • The much-maligned Eurogamer leak, which has now been proven to have been 100% correct on every other detail, stated that Nintendo was sacrificing power in favour of portability.

  • We're looking at a thin, small portable console with a "bright, HD" screen. Even if that only means 720P (which I'm assuming it does), something has to give to keep the cost of this thing down. Nintendo has been de-emphasizing graphical power for the last two generations; draw the obvious conclusions.

  • Nintendo chose to unveil the console by showing it running: a remaster of a last-generation game, a game that's also coming out on the Wii U, three games with the patented Nintendo colourful art style which doesn't take a lot of graphical fidelity to make beautiful-looking games with, and a basketball game that we didn't get a very good look at. Unless NBA looks like a PS4 title and we just can't tell from this footage, this should send a clear message. I'm expecting something between the Wii U and the Xbox One, and probably leaning further toward the former than the latter.

Now, there's one possible silver-lining for the graphics hopefuls, which is the dock. I aggressively shot down the idea that the dock would boost the console's power back on the NX sub-reddit, but I have to admit that it's much larger and beefier-looking than I had anticipated, which is somewhat giving me pause. I still find the idea very unlikely, but I'm not quite as certain as I was before that it won't provide some sort of visual boost, even if it's only upscaling.
