Question about HDMI converter

Hi all,

I decided to make a project about hooking up my N64 through my Xbox One along with my cable box. I knew this would require two separate pieces of equipment: an HDMI converter, and an HDMI switch. I bought these two items: HDMI swicth RCA to HDMI converter

My question pertains to the output aspect ratio of the N64 going through the converter. I would like it displayed in a 4:3 aspect ratio when playing on my TV. It seems possible to do this as when I switch the input or first turn on the N64, it briefly displays in a 4:3 ratio before switching to 16:9. The picture quality in the 16:9 aspect ratio is....well, not the best. It's playable, but stretched out (obviously) and difficult to read text. When the 4:3 aspect ratio is displayed, albeit briefly, it is much better in quality. Oddly enough, running the HDMI cable directly into the TV produces a 16:9 image immediately without displaying 4:3 first.

My question is this: is there a way to get it to display in 4:3 permanently? I would rather not mess with the TV aspect ratio settings as I am running this through my Xbox. Or, and this would be a possibility too, is there another converter which allows the customization of display settings? The only thing I keep seeing is the XRGB Mini Framemeister, but I would like to avoid spending $300+ if possible. The picture quality isn't too much of a concern outside of the aspect ratio as well.

I'd appreciate any help you all can offer!

Edit:

So, on a whim, I stopped at RadioShack on my way home from work and picked this up. This actually has a maximum output of 480i according to the box. It does not upscale. And, even better, it works! It displays in a 4:3 aspect ratio without messing with the picture settings on my tv.

From what I can tell, it does not upscale at all. It merely converts to HDMI. There are no settings or switches to pick 720 or 1080p. Just input and output.

So what I've concluded is an upscale will (almost) always stretch to 16:9, and a straight up converter such as the one I now have will keep the original aspect ratio. Honestly, the picture with the RadioShack converter looks fantastic on my tv, which is about 52". Hope this helps everyone.
