Hey friends! I'm finally buying my first real TV like a real grown up, hooray! No more dorm-room-style-watching-videos-on-my-desktop-computer.
Here's my question: what is the best way to play my 720 and 1080 digital movie files (and I'm hoping via VLC because I doubt my Xbox One or Wii U could handle subtitles properly) on my TV? I'd rather not have my entire computer sitting in the living room connected with an HDMI cable, and I'd also rather not stream the video content to my TV wirelessly, as I don't trust wireless connections for seamless playback.
The thing my unseasoned mind first jumped to, which is an area of technology I am unfamiliar with, is:
• A Mac Mini. I could connect a wireless keyboard/mouse from my couch area, and connect the Mac Mini with HDMI to the Smart TV. I would then connect an external HD to the Mac Mini to store the movie files. This would allow me to play my files on the big screen with VLC, and would also allow me to play browsered HBO Now on the big screen (because for some reason my Smart TV doesn't have an HBO Now app).
• Apple TV. Honestly, after reading the description a million times, I still can't really make head or tail of whether or not this does what I want it to do. Maybe somebody here can fill me in on the functions of Apple TV that don't involve wirelessly connecting to iTunes or Netflix, which is the last thing I need.
So that's it. I'm not the most savvy when it comes to digital hardware technology, and I'd appreciate any help on the best way to incorporate both VLC for digital movie files and browsered HBO Now into my living room entertainment center. To be perfectly honest, I'm not too excited about the prospect of dropping $500.00 on a Mac Mini for such a limited use of it. Does anybody else have another idea or recommendation?
