Hello fellow brothers and sisters!
I've made a post about this before but not as in-depth and I posted it "at the wrong time" so not that many people saw it. I thought I should make a post about this again since I've had a lot of fun thanks to it and more people should know about it.
Before we get started, here's the link to Moonlight, which is what I'll be writing about today. And here is the direct link to the github where they release their PC version. The application is also available on iOS, Android and on the Amazon Store (I'm assuming for those with an Amazon device).
What am I talking about
I'm talking about Nvidia's Gamestream feature which lets anyone with an Nvidia card (600 series and up) stream a game to a friend and also let that friend participate in the game with low latency, which makes it possible to play some local co-op games together.
Moonlight does the exact same thing but with a bit more freedom and more features.
Limitations of Nvidia Gamestream
As of writing, the current limitations (that I can think of at least) are as follow:
- Only games that support exclusive fullscreen work. Nothing else.
- One hour limit of the stream. After one hour, the joining player will be disconnected and the host will have to send a new invite.
- The stream is limited to 720p and 30fps.
- The joining player cannot use a controller (like the Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller) on his/her computer.
Features of Moonlight that differ from Nvidia's own Gamestream
- All games are supported. Even programs. Stream whatever you want and let your friend take control of your mouse.
- No time limit whatsoever.
- Stream is only limited to the host's resolution. Options to change resolution of the stream, 30/60 fps and bitrate are available.
- The joining player can use a controller and can even rebind controls.
What to do as host
- Give your friend your IP.
- When your friend tries to pair with you, give him/her the code that pops up.
- Done.
What to do as a joining player
- Download Moonlight.
- Enter your friend's IP.
- Click "Pair".
- Enter the code that your friend gives you.
- Click "Show App List".
- Pick a game to play.
What if the game isn't in the list?
If the game you want to play isn't in the list, the host can either add it to his/her Nvidia GeForce Experience (not sure how to do that, I don't have an Nvidia card) or add it to Steam as a Non-Steam Game.
As my last words, I'd like to point out that I've been having a great time playing XCOM 2 (I made three characters, he made three, I took over his mouse when it was my character's turn), Invisible Inc. (same thing, I took over my friend's mouse when it was my turn) and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth (I played with my Xbox 360 controller).
I hope you enjoyed this (maybe obvious) guide and will enjoy playing any game with a friend of yours!
