Problems using a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to connect Surface Book to TV?

Hello,

I recently picked up a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter cable with the intention of playing videos from my Surface Book on my living room TV.

Here is the exact cable I purchased:

After connecting the Book and my TV with the cable, I was unable to transmit any video or audio to the TV, regardless of which external monitor settings I used. After switching to some other resolution settings other than the default (3k x 2x), I was able to hear some of the audio (very low quality), and a grainy, fuzzy, greyscale picture on the TV. If it helps, the TV is an older 50" 720p (not 1080...) Vizio. I tried running the HDMI cable through my AVR (Marantz SR7007, which I usually run everything else (cable, xbox, apple TV, etc) though), and didn't have any success.

Think the problem is with the cable, or settings on the Surface Book? Thanks.
