Looking for Buying Advice, Just Not From a Salesman

So I'm looking to upgrade from my generic $250 2012 720p TV to something a little more macho.

I've landed a new job and I've settled down a bit for the next couple years. It's just me and the girlfriend, no kids, and we're way within our budget. We just don't spend a ton of money.

I'm looking for a TV for gaming and viewing streamed media. I do not have cable, and I have no intention to get cable. I don't really want to go out of my way to pay for anything above 1080 and 60hz, my Xbox One and PS4 won't output past 1080 and 60fps, and all the streaming content would be coming from the Xbox One.

I'm saving up money to buy a TV during Super Bowl time, I've heard that's a great time to buy. I just don't know enough to be confident in my purchasing. I've heard sound on these TV's are usually poop, so people say to get a soundbar. But I've also heard that most of the time they aren't worth the investment. I have a good set of headphones that I sometimes use for gaming, but I prefer not to use them. My girlfriend likes to watch and listen if she isn't playing with me.

My main question is: What are the most important aspects to look for? I'd love some advice from someone who isn't actually trying to sell me a TV. I realize that with electronics, you rarely find a great steal. You usually pay for what you get, I've learned that through quite a few Black Fridays. I'd like this to be the last TV I buy for 3-5 years.
