TL;DR - Is a 720p TV a better buy, (in Brazil and on a budget), than a 1080p TV SPECIFICALLY, ONLY for playing games on PS3 and PS4, due to the system being able to render at the NATIVE resolution of the TV. Obviously 1080p costs more, since 720p is cheaper and it will allow for the native res, is this a better option?
Long Version - Okay now I am trying to help my friend who lives in Brazil find an optimal TV for his PS3, he may, someday, get a PS4. I don't want to fight. Sony systems ARE MUCH BETTER than Xbox. I'm not attempting to debate systems. What I am looking for is honest answers, so please don't jump on me. I'm with Sony fans. they're pretty much correct that PS systems are a far better purchase than Microsoft. Anyway, what I need to know is how to figure out the best resolution for PS3 and PS4. Both have hardware limitations, which is understandable, consoles have to actually be affordable. What I need to know is, (and FYI he is highly money constrained), is if getting a 720p TV is a better overhaul option for both systems because PS3 (which he already owns) cannot output at 1080p and most games on the PS4 can't either. This is a real limitation that has to be dealt with, and when the rendered resolution is lower than the native resolution, the image will suffer in quality and will alias. Again, I am NOT ripping on PS3 or PS4. I totally understand that Sony had no real choice in order to make their console affordable. (XboxOne has even worse resolution problems obviously.) He does not intend to watch TV, only play games on it.
