[Discussion] Samsung's failure to update older android devices is reason not to support future ones.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Gsmarena

In Fall of 2013, Samsung released a tablet called the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. It was considered a high-end tablet, and I happened to purchase one. The hardware is decent, and for the time it was great: Many reviews pointed to it as the best android tablet of the day, and it retained that title for much of 2014.

But in November of 2014, 14 months after the tablets' release, Google released the first version of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Developers began rolling out the update to devices over the next few months. What did Samsung do with the tablet they called "2014 edition" when the update hit? Ignored it. Sure, they gave it to other newer devices, and more popular ones-- but the "2014 edition" label was clearly just a merketting gimmick, not a promise to support the device through at least the end of 2014. As of now, the latest software on the SMP-600 Galaxy Note 10.1-2014 Edition is Android 4.4.2: Kit Kat.

Samsung has left users with antiquated software and security risks. Until Samsung releases an update for this tablet, I don't plan to buy another Samsung Product-- and I encourage you all to think hard about the implications of this before buying another Samsung device.
