I just realized I'm 2 months past my upgrade through Verizon for a new phone. I've been using and enjoying (mostly) my Galaxy S4, which is a HUGE improvement over the Thunderbolt I was using before, and a big leap in terms of Samsung phones that I'm used to, since I had a Vibrant ages ago when I was with TMo.
I was leaning more towards a phablet, but I'm not sure I can wait until September to see what the Note 5 has to offer. The latest update on this S4 has made it wacky and unusable at times without a reboot. I'd also like to use a custom ROM (am I allowed to talk about this here?) if that affects choosing.
To use the template...
Price range - on contract, upgrade, doesn't really matter. I'd rather not buy outright.
Screen size - I hated on phablets when they came out, but I'm warming up to the idea of a phone that's tablet-ish. I'd rather not go smaller in screen size than my S4.
Typical use - I play a lot of Ingress, but no really intensive games. I've usually tried to be on the bleeding edge of phone tech, but fallen short. Stability is something that I would say is my first priority, then performance, then battery life. I'd also like expandable storage and a replaceable battery, but those are things I'd be willing to compromise on for a truly stellar device.
Location - North America, Verizon
Anything else - I've found, ever since I left my Palm Treo 650 back in 2008, that the phones I've used haven't measured up to the utility of the Palm. That phone, despite it's rudimentary interface and technological shortcomings, was a powerhouse of organization and utility. The best part was that it just worked. My G1 was great, but quickly became obsolete, my Vibrant was pretty but underwhelming, and after I switched to Verizon, I found that Motorola phones were abysmal. I liked the Thunderbolt (who didn't like 4G when it came out?) and HTC phones in general, but again, I wasn't as blown away by it as I was when I got my first "smartphone" in the Treo. I'd like that feeling back.
