This Week in News

  • Android M Dev Preview 2 Released: The new version of the Android Dev Preview is here, bringing more functionality to tease those who can't wait for the real thing to come knocking on their door later this year. Those eager to download the OTAs for their Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and/or Nexus 9 will find them here. The update fixes the some bugs like the 24-hour default snooze in the Clock app, and among the new features, there is a System UI tuner enabled through Developer Options that allows one to customize various icons in the status bar. Despite these additional theming capabilities, the Dark Theme has been removed. A favorite addition among early adopters is the ability to have a battery percentage indicator inside the battery icon. Long time coming!

    • OnePlus 2 AMAA and 4GB of DDR4 RAM: Now that OnePlus is getting closer to its new flagship launch, the company has treated us with new information: the OnePlus 2 will come with 4GB of DDR4 RAM allowing you to enjoy sweet multitasking and finally make good use of the 64-bit nature of the Snapdragon 810. Apart from sharing not-so "awesome and great" video the company also held an AMAA in our subreddit where it shared a lot of good things (and dodged virtually every Snapdragon 810 question). July 28, mark your calendars!
    • Note 5 Early Launch With a Totally Shocking 4GB of RAM: Reports have it that Samsung will bring forth the launch of the Galaxy Note 5 to around mid-August, allegedly to better position the flagship against the competition. Sources also say that Samsung's new phablet will pack 4GB of DDR4 RAM, which we all expected anyway. Will it come with a microSD slot? Nobody can say, and because nobody should, nobody did.
    • New Version of Wear Coming with New Tap Function, Watch-to-Watch Communication: Reports of an upcoming Wear update detail a way for developers to add a tap gesture to their watchfaces in order to fire activities, apps or change the watchface and its widgets. While invisible buttons and other methods allow for similar functionality at the moment, a built-in and straightforward solution is very welcome. Some information about a Wear-to-Wear communication "Together" app surfaced, but not much is known as of yet, not even if it's restricted to a single watchface (I personally doubt that). Let's just hope it's not a heartbeat mimic-gimmick. Also, the G Watch R will allegedly receive native Wi-Fi support with this update. Read more here!

OnePlus Controversy Sparks Then Quickly Dissipates: An interview with OnePlus CEO Carl Pei had the company reveal some of its plans for the future, which included storing biometric information of users to handle transactions and make device migration easier. The internet quickly spoke out, and then Carl Pei added that the service would not be a default setting to opt-out of, but rather opt-in.. He also said that the OP2 will only store biometric data locally and not on a cloud/server. Luckily, this time the controversy was short-lived. Sorry r/conspiracy, no NWO to be found here.

This Week in Apps

  • In a predictable move, Fleksy keyboard has had its price removed to instead go the IAP route. Already-paid users have been offered new themes as compensation. There is also a theme design contest going on.

  • Google Search can now give you “did you mean…” corrections in search suggestions. This is different from other platforms where the correction appears in the results, not the suggestions.

Google Maps v9.11 let’s you hide UI elements and you can share My Maps (not my My Maps, your My Maps, I mean).

You can now send directions from Google Maps on the desktop straight to your Android device. Considering it’s much easier to browse maps on a desktop computer than on a phone, many will enjoy this.

Google Messenger v1.4 brings location sharing, fast scrolling, new sticker support and more.

Play Books v3.5 gets a needed visual refresh in the main panels, and a new way to discover books you might be interested in.
