I was playing a moderately intensive video game called 'DOTA 2' on May 31st. The computer suddenly shuts down. All other electronics in the house are still functional -- it is not a blackout.
I try to power it back on, it does not. Something might have shorted or overheated. I open the case to find out. Everything looks fine other than being a little dusty. I start to troubleshoot the problem by removing various parts to isolate the problem part or parts.
Removing the Galaxy GTX 660 GC 2GB did the trick. The computer works again. I assume the only issue was the GPU.
June 1st. My card is still under warranty, I went ahead to contact tech support and RMA my card. Afterwards, I bought myself a MSI GTX 960 2GB Gaming to replace the Galaxy GTX 660.
I got home and installed the MSI GTX 960. The computer powers up, the fans spin for a few seconds, and then shuts down. About 4-5 seconds later, it repeats and repeats.
I thought it might have something to do with the PSU. I swapped the power cable connecting to the GPU as well as used a different modular slot. Nothing changed.
Maybe it is the MOBO causing the fault. I moved the GPU to another PCI-E slot (with 4x bandwidth). The problem still occurs, but something strange occurs occasionally. Occasionally it powers longer for a few seconds. But instead of showing the typical POST screen, it showed a blank UEFI page and then shuts down after a few seconds. This also occurs on the normal PCI-E slot.
So what is the problem and how can I address it?
Note: scouring the internet for help, I realised I do not have a MOBO speaker installed. Would probably get one tomorrow.
