I've been using my faithful Galaxy S3 since 2012 and it's starting to show its age somewhat. I upgraded to the S4 last year but ended up rolling back to the S3 as the S4 saw the S series throw out FM radio capability. I've been keeping an eye out for rumours and new releases as I start to look for a new phone; the Nexus 6 initially caught my eye due to the huge screen and the front-facing speakers.
I have bad eyesight so this time around I'm looking for a big phone, 5.5"+ hopefully. I'm also interested in front-facing speakers after hearing so much praise regarding the One M8 and the Nexus 6. The problem here is that it seems all current phablets omit the FM radio, a feature I frequently use on my S3.
- Note 2 has FM radio but no 4G and no front-facing speakers
- Note 3 and Note 4 have no FM radio
- OnePlus One has no FM radio
- HTC Desire 820 has FM radio but somewhat low-mid specs and very mixed opinions regarding it
- HTC Desire 826 doesn't seem to be a thing here in the UK yet
- HTC One E9 Plus again doesn't seem to have come to the UK
- Nexus 6 has no FM radio
- LG G3 and G4 have FM radio but no front-facing speakers
I get that a large part of FM radio's shunning is likely carriers paying off manufacturers to disable it so customers have to sign up for beefier tariffs in order to stream it over the Internet. FM radio and the lack thereof has had a little bit of attention on Reddit recently. Hope may be slim, but I still do hope that Google and maybe even Samsung get the message and re-implement it. For now, I'll be watching out for the specs of the Note 5, OnePlus Two, and 2015 Nexus devices.
