How do you deal with tiny text/GUI/HUD Elements when playing on your TV ?

My PC is connected to my TV via HDMI. I play the majority of my games at my desk with mouse and keyboard but I also like to relax on my couch and play with the wireless xbox controller once in a while.

I've been dealing with this problem since I hooked up my PC :

Small Text and HUDs

Take GTA V for example : Okay, I've played it on PS3 so the resolution was a lot lower than 1080p, but now on PC I can't read any text or see anything on the minimap.

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt : Excellent Controller Support, but the same problem with the small HUD.

I understand that the PC versions are made with the monitor user in mind, sitting behind his 24" display @1920x1080 and not the TV at 40" and at 3 or 4 meters distance.

Switching the resolution to 720p doesn't seem to help much because the HUD and texts scale with resolution.

Do you have any suggestions or solutions, maybe specifically for Witcher 3 or GTA 5 ?
