Played through the first mission of the Single Player mode and one multiplayer match. Just giving raw first impressions. (NOTE: Clocked in well over 300 hours into the PC version).
-
Visuals: Surprisingly comparable. Texture quality took a nosedive, shadow cascades are much shorter than even the Xbox One version, directional occlusion is gone, and the game caps out at 720p regardless of what mode you're playing in, but the core visuals are in-tact and the polygon complexity, surprisingly enough, appears to also be in-tact.
-
Sound: Fine. It's using compressed .ogg files instead of the .wav files the PC version uses, but it's not going to be a big issue (.ogg files tend to be smaller than .mp3 since they have dynamic bitrate that will compress less important info when it needs to and boost the bitrate back up when required, thus, keeping file size down while also keeping the quality on-par with .mp3)
-
Performance: Janky. Nevermind that the frame rate is capped at 30FPS (and NO, THERE IS NO INTERPOLATION! That was from a bad camera feed that was capturing portions of one frame at the same time another frame was being faded out!), the performance just can't hold 30FPS at all times. There was one section where the frame rate got so low, the game was actually running at half-speed.
-
Controls: Great if you're using the Pro Controller, merely okay if you're using the Joy Cons.
-
General Multiplayer: Fine. It has the latest 6.66 patch installed (part of the REQUIRED 10GB Day One patch), so the multiplayer content is on-par with every other version. Same multiplayer game, but at a much lower (albeit stable now) frame rate. Not a lot of players currently, however.
Should I get it?
Depends. If you've never played the game before and you've only got a Switch, then yes. If not (or you the idea of a completely portable modern AAA shooter/portable DOOM entices you that much), honestly, wait for it to go down to $30.
