[Question][Performance] Can I anyhow improve my PoE and get rid off slideshow mode?

Hi, I am not any pro-gammer or programmer and started play PoE exactly 1 year ago, because already have family, its first game I really play after long time.

I bought 2years ago my notebook with extra graphic card, for possibility to play some games on it too: Dell Inspiron 7737 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4500U processor (3M Cache, 1.80 GHz) 16GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (2x8GB) 1TB SATA (5 400 ot./min) NVIDIA® GeForce with CUDA® GT750M 2GB GDDR5 Win 10

I know its without ssd which is suposed help a lot :) Not sure, but feel like my performance droping more and more, specialy after last big win10 update (already folowed advice here with removing xbox app from system - dont feel like it helped)

I already put all possible setings to minimum and play now on fullscreen 1280*720 ... from full HD i used before.

Problem is that if its more action or whatever in game ... sometimes game go to "slideshow" mode ... watched it more close previous days and see my fps have "peaks" for short periods to 2fps .. etc from my normal 40-60 depends on settings i just triing and area where I am atm ... (before thought its connection problem, but now sure its not)

It really sucx because thats thing which always kill u .. If you ever saw something like on one screen everything is ok .. (slideshow start), next screen u see u got hit ... and next have already RIP msg, sometimes funny with suposed to have 40%+ live ...

It happening specialy during bossfights, when boss or area mechanics spam more skills ... etc Durring essence I killed uber Izaro just 2, because got tired of 4-6 lag deaths in final room, same with Atziri, maybe 10 and gived this fight up ... It always upset, when I see how Mathil and others just dodge all these mechanic attacs, and I know I can do it too ... but when your game slideshow even for 0.2-0.4sec ... you just dont manage to avoid Atziri flameblast or others avoidable things ... and you are toast ...

Its my machine soooo bad for PoE, or its because game engine people complain about ... or problem can be somewhere else?

Any recomendation/advice for any test or something how to find out and fix it if its possible? I always see mention abou botllenecked graphic .. but how I can tell if its my case?

Thanks a lot, I hope this question (more answers) can help more players to improve game experience with this highly addict great game :)

HD60 in OBS, CPU usage and performance.

Hello, I recently bought Elgato Game Capture HD60 for my laptop. I’m playing on my XB1 and stream via PC. I’m using OBS to stream but I’m seriously considering trying the Elgato software. Before HD60 I was capturing screen with xbox app being streamed there, just a workaround to see how streaming tastes. I’ve decided to get HD60 to improve quality of my content. I was able to stream 1080p with quite success before so I hoped that with new hardware it will be even better. Surprisingly just connecting my Elgato as a capture device in OBS and setting in my scene is using 20% of my CPU while being idle (not streaming) without touching settings I was totally unable to stream due to constant 100% of CPU usage. I’ve done some fiddling with settings and I’m stable at 720P@30fps but I really expected 1080p. Am I doing something wrong or proper capture hardware provides proper video so OBS has way more work to do? That’s the only explanation to what’s eating my CPU. Also, my PC is not new one, but was solid. It’s a Lenovo laptop with 16GB of ram and i7 Q720 CPU. I’m on Windows 10. Any tips are welcome.

Spreading misinformation about display technology and energy consumption on this Sub, Youtube and other Boards

Hello /r/NintendoSwitch!

I have read a lot of false claims about a few technological things that got heavily upvoted and people are even insulting others if they disagree (720p v 1080p Display for example).
If you are interested in this topic you should read it even tho its quiet long.

So I want to clear some things up.
I have read comments like "a 1080p Display would skyrocket the price and the battery life would decrease drastically " or "if you increase the numbers of pixels you increase the energy consumption - logic". Comments like this get upvoted even tho they are wrong.

Now we have to look at a few things separately.
If you want to talk about the price you have to look at the industry standard. Displays become cheap over time as you can see with all the cheap 4k TVs. 1080p become the standard a few years ago. They are nothing special you can find them literally everywhere. I bought a Nexus 7 three years ago which was arguably one of the strongest 7-inches Tablets on the market. it had a 1080p screen and i paid 180€. You can buy a Nvidia Shield with a Tegra Processor for 200€ and it got an 8-inches screen.

You already find 1440p screens in 5,5 inches smartphones so 1080p already became the "old standard" and it cannot be THAT expensive to "skyrocket" the price.

The next thing is that people claims the battery life would suffer from a 1080p screen.

There are two factors that you have to look at: what power does the screen itself use? and what power does the GPU use to render the image?
What power does the screen itself use? You have to remember the law of physics that energy cannot be lost. It only changes the from. So if you power a screen with electric energy you change the energy into light and heat. You want light and you don't want heat. You are talking about "effectiveness" here. There is no real difference between 720p or 4k screens in effectiveness. If you think a 4k screen has a higher energy consumption you would say that it's either much hotter or much brighter. And that's only the case if you let them. A 4k screen CAN be much brighter but just because it has the potential to do so doesn't mean you have to use this feature.

"But more Pixel = more energy?".
That's not exactly true. Look at this like this: You have 1 light bulb with 100 Watts and three with 25 Watts each. What needs more current? That's just an example to show you that you can't see it that way. As I said before, a higher resolution screen CAN be brighter and therefore use more energy, but you can regulate it to be as bright as a lower resolution screen.
The most important part about energy consumption in displays is the size and the brightness.
Besides the technology of cause but that's not part of this discussion.

PROOF A HIGHER RESOLUTION SCREEN HAS NOT A HIGHER ENERGY CONSUMPTION
If you look at TVs for example:
The Samsung UE55J6300 is a 1080p TV and it has an output of 83 Watts. The Samsung UE55JU6450 is the same TV but with a 4k panel and it has an output of 85 Watts.
You can see there is almost no difference

Source (in german "power consumption is "Energieverbrauch" in german):

http://www.zambullo.de/fernseher/datenblatt/UE55J6350#Energieverbrauch
http://www.zambullo.de/fernseher/datenblatt/UE55JU6450#Energieverbrauch

"But the GPU needs more work to output a higher resolution. That means the GPU has a higher energy consumption and the battery life will be shorten"

Thats only really true if you are talking about idle. The Switch is a gaming device and its build to run under full load.
Let me explain it to you. If you want to talk about the performance of hardware you talk about Flops which basically means "calculations per seconds". The Ps4 can make 1,8 trillion calculations per second. The Xbox can do 1,3 trillion. Let's just assume the Switch can do 1 trillion in the undocked mode.
The Switch display is only relevant in the undocked mode so we don't have to consider a potential overclock in docked mode.
The goal from every developer is to hit 100% GPU load. If you have finished your game and you are sitting at an average of 60% GPU load you can use the unused power to make the game look prettier by increasing texture quality, field of view, Anti-Aliasing et cetera until you hit ~100%. This is called "optimization".

Now if you render an image in 1080p you need full performance from your GPU which is 1 trillion calculations per second. If you now want to render the exact same image in 720P you only need 0,6 trillion calculations per second and now you are sitting at 60% GPU load. So whats now? You can increase the Framerate to hit 100% or you can do other stuff. But you dont want to sit at 60% GPU load because you want to make your game as pretty as possible. Literally every game ever made tried to hit ~100% GPU load. And it really doesn't matter if you render an image in 1080p or 480p if you hit 100% load. The power consumption will be the same.

I have tested it with my GPU as you can see here: http://imgur.com/a/oTPfe
The power consumption was fluctuating between 97% and 100% when the GPU Load hit 100%.
"yes maybe but the dev can just lower the graphics on a 720p screen to lower the GPU load"
I have literally never heard that a dev intentionally misses a huge part of the hardware performance just to keep the device cool and increase the battery life. And you know, you can do the same with a 1080p screen.

The current gen consoles PS4 and Xbox Ones often render games at a lower resolution than 1080p even tho they are used with 1080p screens.

"Smartphone manufacturers like HTC said they wont use 1440p screens in their devices because its will lower the battery life"
Yes, that's true but a Smartphone runs in idle most of the time. It's a difference if you render an image in "idle" between 720 and 1440p because the GPU has room to scale. E.g. a 720p Smartphone runs at 7% GPU load in idle. A 1440p Smartphone runs at 15% load in idle.

[Build Help] $200 Barebones i3 build? (already have graphics card, storage prepurchased)

Build Help:

I have read the sidebar and rules

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This is going to be a light intro-to-gaming PC for my little sister. My parents gave me the task of building it for under $200, so I wanted to see if it was possible by using parts from my old PC (Graphics card and storage), and buying the rest.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

I know that the graphics card I've got can play most games at 1080p 60FPS medium settings, but currently my sister is using a 720p TV as her monitor (she's using an Xbox 360 so it really doesn't make a difference for that). This will be upgraded at some point later, but for now she's focused on games like GTAV and Minecraft, which I know for a fact that the graphics card I have can handle. TL;DR I'm not too worried about this part.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My parents have given me a budget of $200 for the case, power supply, processor, motherboard, and RAM.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States (I live about 30 minutes away from a MicroCenter as well, so that's in the question)

Build Draft: (Note: This part list doesn't include a motherboard, I need help picking one out) PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Power Supply Thermaltake SMART 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $34.99 @ Newegg
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 OEM 64-bit Purchased For $0.00

Mail-in rebates -$25.00
Total $210.94

*Additional Details: *

I'm trying to go for an i3-6100 if possible, and keep upgradability at the forefront. I know it's not quite ideal, but I've had some bad experience with AMD processors in the past (and I'm sure their next gen won't be out by christmas) so I'm going to go ahead and rule that out right now. I'm completely impartial when it comes to:

the case (She likes purple but my dad does bodywork on cars so he can help make it purple)

power supply (but I don't want to set the world on fire)

Motherboard (This is the only thing I'm really not sure about to be honest, which is why one is not included in my primary build)

RAM (I just picked the lowest price 8gb single stick DDR4 on PCpartpicker, I chose single stick because of upgradability).

As I said above I'm not too far away from a Microcenter, so the $30 dollars off mobo/processor deal is gonna help save money but I just wanna see if it's even possible to go cheaper on this without accidentally creating a makeshift nuclear explosive.

Will I notice a difference between 1080p and 4k on a ~40" screen?

It will be in my apartment, approx. six feet away from my couch. I currently have a 720p TV (I know, its old), and I did notice a difference between a VGA and HDMI connection to an XBox One, where my gf didn't see a difference. Just wondering if a 4k is worth it for this size of screen.

Which one of these will run Watch Dogs 2 better at 720P?

Alienware Alpha R2 with a I7 7700T and a GTX 960 4GB and 16GB RAM or Xbox One. I care about graphics and framerate. Thanks!!!

I'm going crazy I'm actually gonna cry.

I've been a console gamer my whole life (only 13 but still). I've gone from 3ds to wii to Xbox 360 to wii u to Xbox one. I've finally made it to the top of the mountain. I just purchased all my parts and they are coming in 7-10 days.

I am so excited. I've heard that the fps and graphics aren't even comparable and I've never truly seen above 60fps or 720p (yes I play Xbox one on a 720p monitor. Hell, right).

I'm super excited and I can't thank this sub Reddit enough you guys honestly are the only reason why I've become so interested in computers and the reason why I've just ordered my parts. Thank you, I hope this will be fun :').

Rasbian running Moonlight + Kodi

Hello all.

I have a pi that i use to stream my Steam and also to use as a media center through Kodi.

The pi boots to Kodi but i'd like to know if there is any way to add something like a exit option or shortcut on Kodi that would exit Kodi and start steam.

Atm i exit Kodi to prompt and to start Moonlight i then have to go through ssh and type moonlight stream -720 192.168.1.xxx -mapping xbox.conf

Basically i'd like to exit Kodi to prompt or exit Kodi and start Moonlight.

Thanks all!

I had to really step back and admire my setup today. One year ago it was a 32" 720p TV, just my Xbox One (no PC), Walmart chair, and a desk I'd had since I was 8.

Xbox One streaming to Samsung KU7500 4K is inconsistent. Please help!

I hope this is the right place to ask this...

So, I just purchased the Samsung KU7500 set. It is a 65", 4K, HDR, curved set. My wife and I only stream our shows at night in a very dark room. We use Netflix, Hulu, and HBO NOW to stream our shows.

The streams are horribly inconsistent with one scene looking gorgeous and the next having terribly inconsistent black levels and a pixelated look throughout the very dark areas. The stream isn't dropping from 1080p to 720p or anything of that nature. I have a 75mbps connection that is hardwired to my Xbox One.

I haven't noticed this problem while gaming, yet. Is there any way to fix this?

Thank you!

New Owner questions on the KS8000.

Please bare with me as this is the first 4K TV I've owned and hd some questions to clarify something's. On input 1, I have an Xbox One S hooked up, on input 2-fire TV, input 3-PS4 and input 4 to be for a laptop to stream hockey from.

  1. My understanding is Input 1, HDR is automatically on. Since I also watch Blu-Rays and UHD on the Xbox, I used the settings of ratings.com. Will I still get the full benefit of HDR especially with gaming, or do I need to turn on game mode when I play a game?

  2. I stream tv through PS Vue on the fire TV which also has Kodi and also watch some movies/shows on Kodi. PS Vue I believes peaks at 720p on Fire TV. When watching tv should I turn on HDR+(my understanding is it is to be used with lower than 1080p content)? Also, would I also leave HDR+ for watching Kodi or turn it off(I would assume off since I can stream 1080p)?

  3. Do I need to switch my inputs around? I've read on so many TV's and maybe getting confused because I can't find it on this set, by I thought I had read input 2 was for PC and PC mode would be automatically turned on? Does this actually affect anything? Is HDR still on the other inputs?

Thanks in advance for the answers. This sub and Avsforums helped educate me and make a decision I'm happy with. Just want to get the best possible out of the set.

2.Will the charger that the RPI comes with be able to support the following peripherals all at the same time

  • A 2.5" hard drive enclosure that is powered by USB
  • A Xbox 360 wireless controller dongle
  • A Bluetooth adapter (That is able to support a mouse and a keyboard at the same time)
  • A wired mouse (if i dont use the bluetooth one)

3.Will i need heatsyncs for doing any of the above at any point?

Nintendo Switch Graphical Power

I just wanted to say people are completely underestimating the potential power of the switch. The Vita, which is ancient now, had the power to run PS3 games but failed to do so due to lack of cooling etc based on its pocket size. Nintendo Switch does not have the same size limits and will be sporting a much more powerful gpu based off of Nvidia latest gpus. The switch is easily going to be more powerful than last gen and should be at least as powerful as current non pro consoles.

Demo of the Vita running a Metal Gear Solid 4 port below. The project was canned due to Sony going with a smaller form factor which meant no active cooling which resulted is less potential power because of overheating issues.

https://youtu.be/BUSKWIIvDKA

Forgot to add a video from Crytek showing the Nvidia Shield TV running Crysis 3 natively. The Shield Tv the choice comparison most people use.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.slashgear.com/crysis-3-on-nvidia-shield-with-android-tv-hands-on-03371969/amp/?client=ms-android-att-us

Another video in higher quality. Crytek demo with more footage starts at 14:01

https://youtu.be/zE0Q06q4V6A

Update 1: To clarify the Switch can be as powerful as ps4 but may just be a small step bellow due to realistic constraints but still reach current console quality. I chose the Vita as an exanple because it was about as powerful as a PS3 but much smaller than both the PS3 and Switch. It had PS3 power in its tiny size nearly 6 years ago the switch is using Nvidias latest tech with a larger over all size and active cooling (maybe more?). We are in a day and age where phones have a liquid cooling function is it so hard to imagine the switch can't?

Update 2: So much focus is on "TFLOPS" but many of you don't consider what that really means so here is a simple comparison and 3 questions to get you thinking. PS4 has 1.84 Tflops and XboxOne is 1.3 Tflops and share many games, how many of you notice a difference? So if Xbox is behind by so much how does it Keep up? If resolution plays such a bug role then how many Tflops does the rumored 720p Switch need to run the game at 720p with little to no loss in overall graphical quality?

Looking to upgrade my computer. http://pcpartpicker.com/ca/p/ypZa

I want to upgrade my pc, first I was looking to get a better CPU but I can't really find any good deals. Should I replace my mother board and so I can be able to use newer processors? The prices of the lga1155 processors seem to have gotten more expensive. I want to have a better gaming PC but now i'm wondering if I should just but an xbox one s.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Muliti-purpose gaming rig.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

720-1080p on a screen less that 25 inches with 50-60fps, high game settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Less than $300 this month, $600 in another month.

In what country are you purchasing your parts? Canada

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). My current rig, with the Pentium G850 CPU bottle neck and shitty gtx650 gpu. http://pcpartpicker.com/ca/p/ypZa

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have put off upgrading a couple years ago in hopes of getting a better deal but it seems I can't find any affordable lga1155 processors now that I want to upgrade. Is buying used ever a smart idea? Was really hoping to get in on a black friday deal.

I can get a PS4 or Xbox One for under $300...

why would I spend that much and then some for a 1080 card? Plus a monitor and keyboard and mouse and an operating system(well I know people that can get me an OS for free)? Plus drivers and updates. Not trying to start a war but anyone with a decent 720 or 1080 tv can run a console with that setup. I've built a SLI (duel 8800gt)setup in the past(years ago)and my latest PC has a 560TI(yes, so it's old)but sometimes plug and play is a nice thing to have; are the FPS and Resolutions worth it to you hard core gamers? If we asume the most similar thing to the nvidia-nintendo custom SOC is the Tegra P1, and the screen is 720p, how feasible is 60 fps in handheld mode?

I know these are rumors but if we assume that the nintendo switch is in between 4 wiiu's ducttaped or half an Xbox one. How reasonable is that each game could easily run at 60fps in 720p. If this is true, the switch could be the real deal.

I dont care about tv mode.

I wonder how advanced BFII will be: Will it be able to harness the full power of the Xbox Scorpio/PS4Pro?

BFII will be releasing a little before the Scorpio comes out, while the PS4Pro is already out. This has me wondering: Will we see BFII be 4k compatible? Will it be a graphics upgrade at all? What about VR Missions?

What I'm really wondering is if the Scorpio will be worth buying just for the for the graphics upgrade for BFII from the Xbox One. Will BFII on Scorpio or PS4Pro have a significantly higher resolution than Xb1 and PS4?

I'm really hoping the graphics upgrade between Xbox One and Scorpio will exist and be significant. Right now Xbox One runs the game at 720p whereas PS4 runs it at 900p, and PC can run it at 1440p.

If BFII can be played at 1080p or 1440p on the Scorpio, then I will definitely consider buying it.

I just thought of this: is it even possible for the same edition of the game to be played at one resolution for XB1 and another for Scorpio, or would they have to release different editions? Since the PC can run it at different resolution I'm not sure why not, but I may just be ignorant.

Building my first ever PC build for my younger sister (Budget build, not looking to go over £300~ish). Only looking to play low end games well at the moment.

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Playing (non demanding) games and using the internet.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

1280x720, 60 fps, medium-high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Preferably only £350~

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

UK, From Amazon if possible.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

What can I substitute out for something cheaper?

So I am not very good at making computers, but my sister is looking to get one for Christmas and I thought I would give it a go. At the moment she normally plays games such as minecraft and Trials Evolution(On Xbox 360 which still lives) and I'm sure when she plays on PC she will get more demanding games, but she dips into games like Halo 3 sometimes. Not looking to go over £380, preferably around £350. Thanks!

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Let's tone down the hype and be honest.

This sub is full of wild dreams and speculations that are far from true, especially in the gaming industry where hype is always let down. So lets be real about a few things.

The size is an issue: Ars and others have done approximate calculations and have come to the conclusion that the Full system (tablet w/ two controllers) is 9.98" x 4.19" That makes it vastly too large for pockets or small purses.

It's meant to be played seated: The switch will have a very similar size and weight to the wiiu tablet or tablets in that form factor (apple air 2), meaning it will not be ideal to play for more than a quick session without bracing your arms against something (your lap, a table, etc).

If its 720p, it will look bad: The screen is rumored to be around 6-7" if it is 720p, you are looking at a terrible PPI (pixels per inch) of 225.94 (using 6.5"). To put that in perspective, its only 50% higher than the WiiU tablet PPI, and to compare it to phones, the Galaxy S2 (2011) had 216.97 PPI, almost all current smartphones have much higher PPI for example Apple has 326 PPI since the iphone 4, and samsung has 577 PPI in the S7.

Youll need to dock it after every other session: Anyone that has owned a Tegra powered device knows that Nvidia achieved the performance it has by sacrificing battery life. The rumored size and Tegra chip put the device at around 2-3 hours of gaming before running out of battery. People are hoping that the controllers have extra battery in them, but design wise, the modular controllers hurt battery capacity a lot, as you give up battery space for structural space.

Dont expect a ton of 3rd party ports/games: Nintendo chose to go the Tegra, which is an ARM based processor, unlike the xbox, ps4, and PC which use x86-64. This means that games have to go through a lot more work to properly port them to the Switch. In essence its like porting a game to your mobile phone (since that also uses ARM). Nvidia has had games ported to their shield devices, but only a handful of major titles, I'd expect more for Nintendo, but I would imagine less than 10% of developers will port to the switch.

Ergonomics will suck: Look at it in tablet mode or controller mode, do those look comfortable? Arguably nintendo has some of the worst first party controller designs, and now they needed it to be symmetrical for sharing, which makes it look even less comfortable Expect to buy a "Pro" controller for home use.

Developer/publisher 'enthusiasm' means nothing: Every Nintendo console release, you get a bunch of developers or publisher who 'sign on' or make positive statements towards the product, they may even have a launch title, but as we've seen with the gamecube, wii, and wiiU, the moment the console fails to sell well, or money could easily be made elsewhere (xbox,ps4, pc) they abandon ship. The switch already has 2 strikes being ARM and having significantly less processing power than the xbox one/ps4/pc. If the device doesnt sell amazingly well (think wii), that will be the third and final strike for large 3rd party devs/publishers.

Anything I've missed? Do you disagree? Let me know your realistic opinions

Trying to get my technology life situated -- suggestions welcome

Hi all,

LONG POST WARNING!!

So I'm a self-proclaimed jack of all trades, master of none. As such, I've accumulated lots of technology, hardware and software over the past several years and it's kind of gotten out of hand. I've got multiple computers, something like 20 or 30 WiFi-connected devices in my apartment (which I live alone in), a 2U Dell Poweredge R720 server, boxes full of cables and other junk and I'm trying to sort, organize, make sense of and utilize everything in the most efficient way possible. I've got a pretty strong background in networking and computing in general, and am comfortable working in Linux (GUI and CLI), so following guides and general suggestions is really all I'm looking for here. Set me in the right direction and give me a push and I'll figure out the rest.

With that being said, here's a brief list of the hardware I have that I want to make use of and/or sell to free up space in my apartment:

  • Dell PowerEdge R720 server (16GB RAM, 2xIntel Xeon processors, 4x HDD's)
  • Dell Optiplex 7010 business-class desktop
  • Custom-built desktop -- 32GB RAM, i7-6700K processor, MSI gaming M5 mobo
  • Scattering of HDD's
  • Old HP Laptop (DV7-3060US)
  • 2x Linksys WRT-54G AP's with DD-WRT flashed on them
  • ASUS RT-AC66U (Primary AP) with Merlin-WRT flashed on it
  • Raspberry Pi 2 (hoping to upgrade to Pi 3!)

Here's a short list of some projects I'd LIKE to work on/have thought about taking on:

  • I'm finishing up my degree with a heavy concentration on Networking & Cybersecurity and am constantly using VM's, so I'd like to use my desktop as some sort of central VM repository. I've briefly used ESXi but haven't gotten deep into the VMWare ecosystem outside of VMWare Workstation. I have access to vCenter and vSphere through my university so I can make use of that as well.
  • I plan on setting up my Pi 2 and/or Pi 3 as an emulation station, which I've already done, and use my wireless Xbox controller for it, for which I already have an adapter.
  • My Optiplex serves as my "server" atm, which hosts a few services that I link to through my DDNS service running on my ASUS AP. So blah.mydomain.com is masked and links back to my server for whatever the service is, but I'm sure there's better ways to do this.
  • I need to figure out what I'm going to do with my Dell Server. I bought it because my job has me rack/stack/cable lots of servers but I never get my hands dirty. I was able to learn a lot about management and configuration in a very short time with this server (mainly remote access stuff) and I've gotten my use out of it....so now what? It's far too loud for me to keep on and since it sits under my guest bed, I'd have to shut it down each time I have a guest.
  • I've thought about setting up the Optiplex as a pfSense router/firewall, but idk if I even need that at this point.
  • I've previously dabbled in WDS and extending my WiFi network with my Linksys AP's, but they're wireless G and I'm running AC on my phone and laptop, so that'd be a boon. I already have a TP-Link powerline adapter with built-in wifi that broadcasts it's own SSID into my guest room, so I might not even need these anymore. I used them extensively in my networking classes, though.
  • I've got my desktop and laptop both running Ubuntu 16.04 and I need to figure out a seamless way to stop work on one machine and pick it up on the other. I already use Dropbox and other cloud software, but I don't want to constantly work out of the Dropbox folder.
  • In the same vein as the previous post, I need to figure out a good backup solution for my desktop and laptop. I am usually on my laptop throughout the day, and use desktop when I'm at home, on weekends, or need heavy-duty work done (running lots of VM's, etc). I have a 2TB WD external HDD that is connected to my desktop but not currently setup for backups, as well as a few 1TB internal HDD's I could use, too. For my laptop and my networking classes, I have a 480GB SanDisk EXTREME External SSD that I use to keep my VM's on, and would love to figure out a way to make this my backup drive since it travels with my laptop wherever I go.
    • I also have 2 more external HDD's --- both 2.5" form factor mechanical HDD's, one is a 1.5TB USB 3.0 HDD, the other is a 1TB USB 2.0 HDD.
    • I guess I could run my own OwnCloud instance and back everything up, but how would I manage remote-access to my machines at home for this to work while I'm on-the-go at work and school?

Sorry for the very long post, but I'm really trying to wrap my head around all the different buckets that I've got a hand in, and really trying to make use of the equipment I have in the best way possible and, most importantly, consolidate and eliminate old equipment. I've got this beast of a desktop that really just sits idle since I'm almost always at work or school. I don't game on it, but I built it to be future-proof, so I'd like to figure out a way to use it and really tax the hardware with virtualization, and combine the functions that I currently get from the Optiplex onto it.

Thanks for reading all this and thanks for any suggestions!
