Before I begin, I must say two things.
- Nintendo has not shared the final name or reveal date with any developer.
- I can not confirm exact specs.
- What was said by neogaf member LCgeek about CPU seems correct, but does not reflect rest of the system at all.
- I know that handheld exists, but have not been given any details. I suspect that the handheld may be a factor in my frustrations.
- This is not an AMA. This is a rant.
I work for a studio under a publisher working on several games for current-gen systems, NX, and PC. When we first heard about NX, we were all cautiously optimistic about getting to work on a Nintendo platform again. Information from Nintendo implied that this would be an easy to develop for console. In truth, it is not hard. The tools may be the best for a Nintendo console yet. However, the performance makes it difficult to optimize for! This is a 2016/2017 console with 2012 performance! To put into perspective, XBox On to PS4 is the same as NX to XBox One. If we make a game that is 1080p on PS4, it is 900p on XBox One and 720p on NX. It does not have CPU bottleneck like other consoles, but still needs a faster GPU to compete. If a game is 900p on PS4, then it may be sub-HD on NX! In 2016! What the fuck Nintendo! As a result, several games which other studios wanted to port to NX console will not be ported at all. Our publisher only has 3-5 games planned for it, less if it is a flop at launch or a game can not be optimized We do not know why NX is so weak, but it may be due to game sharing with handheld? I can not say for sure since I do not think any non-Japanese or maybe non-Nintendo developer actually has access to handheld-specific development tools. I just hope that Nintendo does know what it is doing, or it may become our competitor soon. But with hardware like this, should Nintendo even make consoles anymore? I am not so sure.
