So, a bit of a story: I built a decent mATX PC last year, and it was decent. Then recently I tried to fiddle round in the case and everything was so packed together that when I pushed down on some of the Power Supply wires, it either cracked or pushed down the motherboard to the point where it shorted. It wouldn't power on at all, and I got my friend who helped me build it to confirm that the motherboard was basically dead.
SO now I'm at a point where I want to start saving for a new PC, and to rebuild/upgrade my PC (Ryzen 5, DDR4 support motherboard, new bigger ATX case) it would be roughly $500 or more. The thought came up recently that I cold easily use that saved money (and sell my working PC parts) to get a PS4/Xbox One and a healthy collection of games.
On the one hand: my graphics card (rx 480 4gb), hard drives, ssds, power supplies, and RAM still work. It's just those three components that I really need. Also I have a steam library that comes out to roughly 100+ games (though a decent amount are shared from a friend) so I have a sort of hostage situation when it comes to this.
On the other hand: The components I'm looking at (including the Corsair Carbide Q, AMD Ryzen 5 1500x, and a decent motherboard that I haven't decided on that supports DDR4) can come up to around $400 and $500. Also in the absence of my gaming PC I've been using my laptop to play lower spec games and it's been working fine for simple games; and any more demanding games in my library like Fallout 4 or Wolfenstein the New Order I can buy them for PS4 used. Also PS4 has some exclusives that interest me. Heck if I really wanted to I could futureproof with a PS4 pro (I don't really need it right now since the TV in my apartment is only 720p)
Basically, even with assurances from my friend that the larger full tower case will make things less likely to fuck up, I'm still scared that my own history with messing up technology stuff when I try to do things myself. Console seems like a good way to minimize that risk, and PS4 seems to be the best of the two consoles that interest me. I'm just stuck on whether or not to do it.
