Hey everyone,
I was lucky enough to get a chance to try out the new Switch with my GF at the NYC invite-only event last night. Just wanted to share some quick thoughts on the system and games I got to play...
The system itself
In dock mode, the system is barely noticeable. What I mean by this is, because it's black and relatively small, it blends nicely with any home setup.
Portable mode Nintendo had a mock plane cabin where you got to play the New Mario Kart. This was to showcase the Switch as a portable game device perfect for plane rides. The screen was sharp and beautiful. The Nintendo guide showed us how to remove and put back the controllers with one hand. It's done with a tiny button at the top of the controller, and sliding it up. My GF got it on her first try, but it was a little tricky for me. But once you get it, it's pretty effortless. It slides on and off smoothly.
The viewing angle from the kickstand was perfect for airplane tray tables.
In terms of sound, there was so much noise in the room (the plane booth was right next to the main stage) I can't really tell you how the unit sounds. But I also assume if you're going to be using it on a plane, you'll be wearing headphones.
When I asked reps about the battery life, they noted that it is game dependent. On casual light games like Snipperclips, you'll get the 5-6 hours Nintendo claims. With more intense games like Zelda, you'd get closer to 3.
The JoyCon When I first saw the Joy con, I was a little worried it would be awkward to use, or give me claw hand playing it like a joypad. Playing Mario Kart was surprisingly easy. It rests a bit higher, almost on your finger tips and the buttons are perfectly placed.
I did find myself looking down a lot to find buttons, but that's only because it's all new. By the end of the night, I was playing most games without looking.
The Pro Controller This was my favorite controller by far. It has an xbox controller style (my personal preference) layout, and slight soft coating on the grips, and ergonomic layout that's super comfortable to play.
THE GAMES
Ok, I'll get this out of the way. I didn't get to play Zelda because the line was 45 mins long. I also didn't play Splatoon 2.
ARMS The first game my gf and I played. This was one of my favorite games I played. There's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the movement and mechanics. I was telling the Nintendo employee that it reminded me a lot of Virtua On.
The motion control detection was fast and responsive. I didn't notice any lag when I would throw out an attack or block. After playing a few rounds, I realized how deep and competitive this game could get.
Dash attacks, blocking - counter attacks, curving your punches midway to curve around them, juggles, supers, etc.
It's as deep as any serious fighting game. If you're a fan of Street fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom and/or Virtua On, you're really gonna love this one. I suspect there might be tournaments for this in the future.
1-2 SWITCH Holy crap. 1-2 Switch was one of the funnest times my gf and I had at the event.
We were paired with a group of 3 other guys and went through a few of the mini games.
The quick draw game was funner than I thought. They gave us foam cowboy hats (completely optional) I'll be honest with you, I rolled my eyes a bit when I saw this trailer, but we all had a lot of fun. After you shoot, it shows you who won and how fast each of you drew and where you shot. They had us face off and then also battle back to back, where we took a step and turned to fire. I can see how this could be a fun party game.
The 2nd game we played was the infamous milk the cow. It was hilarious. Milking the udder was surprisingly tricky. There's a lot of nuances, from timing the button holds, to figuring out how far you should pull (you get feedback from the HD rumble feature).
The last demo we got to try out was "count the marbles", where you place the Joycon flat on your hand like a box, and try to guess how many marbles are in the box by moving it around. This was the most impressive demo, but probably the least fun. It's hard to describe how REAL the HD rumble feature feels. It really feels like there are marbles in a box moving around. It's like me telling you I had the most amazing burger at The Smith in NYC. I could describe to you all the little details, but you're not going to "get it" until you try it for yourself. HD Rumble is mind blowing
1-2 Switch would be a great party/drinking game. Something my gf and I said we'd totally be down to do.
SNIPPERCLIPS
When I asked every Nintendo employee at their event what their favorite game was, there's one game that constantly popped up: Snipperclips.
After playing it with my gf, we both agreed it's one of the best / most addictive games for the Switch.
If you've seen the trailer, you'll know how charming this game is. The little facial features that change were great. Some of the puzzles were surprisingly challenging. You'll need a lot of communication and team work because doing a move a millisecond late can mean needing to reset the level. This is definitely a game I would want to bring to the airport.
A lot of fun, one of my favorites.
Ultra Street Fighter 2
This one I was personally excited for. I used to be a competitive Street Fighter player, so when I got a chance I jumped on.
I played the HD / new graphics version using the Pro controller. I found the little d-pad a tad too tiny for me to pull off some moves, so I mainly played using the analog stick.
The analog stick was great for pulling off motions, but I found it tricky to know if you were blocking or not. There were a lot of times where I thought I was blocking low, but wasn't. Super moves, especially 720 motions like Zangief, were easy to pull off.
The two new characters are a lot of fun, especially Violent Ken. He has a dash (done by doing qcf x 2 + k) that adds a lot of sneaky depth to his game. I was cheesing a lot doing blocked attack -> dash -> throw.
Evil Ryu is like Evil Ryu in any other game, with a hop kick and raging demon super.
Both characters have lower health like Akuma.
In terms of this version compared to the original, it felt a little different to me. When I talked to a rep, he said that the game is based of HD remix, but there have been some slight tweaks to blockstun. That's about all I know.
Graphically, I preferred the updated art style and graphics. The classic mode is a great throwback, but is just too pixelated on HD screens.
Bomberman
I've always been a fan of Bomberman. I had a lot of fun playing the switch version. What can I say more other than, well, it's Bomberman. The biggest plus really is the ability to do multiplayer easily.
Overall, I was really impressed with the system and had tons of fun. I'm definitely getting one at launch. The portable screen, along with co-op games were the biggest sells for me.
That's all I can remember, if you have any questions feel free to ask!
